Carpet is designed to hide soil.

Carpet is designed to hide soil especially commercial carpet, which in some cases can hide as much as a pound of dirt in an area the size of a playing card before it even becomes noticeable.

According to industry statistics, 80% of the soil is insoluble (does not dissolve in water) dirt or sand which can abrade or (scratch) your carpet fiber. It would be similar to rubbing a mirror with a piece of sand paper.

No matter how clean the mirror is, it will never reflect light in the same way it did before it was scratched. The same is true for carpet fibers. The actual term for this is apparent ware. The fibers themselves are not worn merely scratched by people walking and grinding the dirt into the fiber. You may notice the little path in some building going around corners, under chairs that roll or areas where hard surfaces meet carpet. That is abraded carpet fibers known as apparent ware. To get the best return on your carpet investment it always pays to have a periodic maintenance program in place.
