Minimal Moisture Carpet Cleaning & Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is a word that is often used to describe the balance of economic development with preservation of natural resources and the pursuit of social equality.

Facility and property managers are now, more than ever aware of the environmental impact of modern living, and are increasingly seeking out companies with a similar commitment to preserving environmental resources.

For the last several years, our company has implemented systems and cleaning methods to adhere to sustainable business practices wherever possible. Our programs are designed to maximize carpet & textiles life cycle, conserve water, and eliminate wastewater.

We primarily use a minimal moisture system that conserves water and eliminates polluted wastewater. There are times when less sustainable practices may be required to correct a specific problem or for restoration cleanings. We will not sacrifice the quality of our work and the efficacy of our products and services in the pursuit of sustainability. However, our experience has proven a professionally designed and implemented maintenance program can often postpone the need for such cleanings indefinitely.

According to the Environmental protection Agency (EPA), efficient water use can have major environmental, public health and economic benefits by improving water quality, maintain aquatic ecosystems and protect drinking water resources.

A typical “steam cleaning” or hot water extraction carpet cleaner consumes over a gallon of water per minute. To clean 1,000 square feet of carpet a typical steam cleaner will use approximately 120 gallons of water. This means that every minute that cleaning is performed; a gallon of water will be removed from the municipal water supply. A variety of cleaning chemicals and solvents will be introduced to the water during the cleaning process. The water that’s recovered from the carpet will thereby contain soil and contaminants from the carpet as well as a host of chemicals. This concoction of “black” water, (in many cases it literally is black) will then be discharged into the municipal sewage system as “spent” water. In other words at a rate of a gallon of water per minute, clean water is consumed, contaminated, and discharged as sewage.

Using our minimal moisture system only a single gallon of water is used to clean 300 square feet of carpet, rather than 40 gallons that a steam cleaner would use. Using less water to clean your carpet also contributes to quicker drying. In areas of the country where high humidity exists, there is a growing concern of microbial activity or mold in the indoor environment. Therefore limiting the amount of moisture introduced to the structure makes good sense.

We use environmentally safe, non-toxic, green cleaning solutions for 99.9% of our work. There is no green silver bullet when it comes to carpet cleaning and spot removal. On the rare occasions, it is required to use alternative cleaning equipment, solvents or harsh chemicals to correct a particular situation we follow OSHA safety guidelines to the letter. If truck mounted hot water extraction or High flow portables are used we use air movers to dry the carpet as quickly as possible minimizing the impact of high levels of moisture. We also do not allow anyone into the area until it is completely safe. The safety of our and employees and clients is always paramount.

Our entire system is designed to minimize the impact on the indoor and outdoor environment.

Our healthy environment and appearance management programs are specifically designed to conserve materials and resources. The environmental benefits of properly maintaining carpet and textiles is that it substantially increases the life cycle of the product, at the same time maximizing usability. It significantly delays the amount of carpet and textiles discarded into landfills and it provides an economic benefit to the facility by reducing the average replacement cost of your carpet and textile assets.

Sustainable practices are not only the right thing to do; it also makes good business sense!
